Sponsored Review: Basic Theory Toners, Facial and Body Scrubs

Basic Theory is a budding local brand founded by two young and aspiring ladies. All the products are 100% vegan and all handmade with love.

So here are some of the products I have tried from Basis Theory.

Basic Theory Just Lavender Polish

What: Body scrub
Suitable for: All skin types
Made in: Singapore
Size: 180 g
Price: $18.90
Where to buy: Lootstore

Give yourself a home spa treatment with BT Just Lavender body polish. This body exfoliator is specially formulated with lavender, sweet almond and Vitamin E oil. Welcome smooth and moisturised skin after one scrub!

Ingredients:

Sucrose, sodium chloride, prunis dulcis oil, simmondsia chinesis, lavendula oil, rosa moschata oil, alpha tocopherol

How I use it:

1. Scoop out product as needed, add a small amount of water if you find it to be too dry. I will btw.
2. Rub product in circular motions onto body gently, focusing more on problematic areas (cellulite, stretch-marks, rough patches like elbows) and leave it on for 5-10 minutes.
3. Rinse off with water. You should feel a thin layer of oil on your skin because it is nourished.
If you find it too oily, feel free to rinse off product with body soap.

Packaging

The actual polish comes in a glass jar. I suggest scooping it out using a spoon of some sort as the scrub tends to get stuck under my nails.

Stars: ★★

Scent

I love the scent. It really feels like I am at a Spa or something whenever I treat my skin with this.

Stars: ★★

Coarse scrub

Hmm, I think it is fine though! Do not rub too hard if your skin turns red easily. I like body scrubs with coarser beads as I feel more clean that way

Stars: ★★

Aftermath

Really very soft after scrubbing. And not drying at all. There is some sort of thin layer of film after you rinse the polish off. I like how it makes my skin feels!

Stars: ★★

Usage

Probably a little more troublesome to use than those in a gel form but this is definitely more environmental friendly. (microbeads in some scrubs cannot be degraded). It is all about getting use to. I typically do a body scrub every once a week.

Stars: ★★★.5☆(4.5/5)

The Verdict:

BT Lavander body polish does a good job; it did everything it is supposed to. Basic Theory also has body polishes in other scents/flavours. Some are really interesting like Earl Grey.

Pros:

- Nice relaxing smell
- Smooth and soft skin after use

Cons:

- Slightly more troublesome to use
- Can be a bit coarse for some

Rating: 9/10

Basic Theory Brightening Wash-off Scrub & Mask

What: Facial scrub
Suitable for: All skin types
Made in: Singapore
Size: 40 g
Price: $15.90
Where to buy: Lootstore

A two-in-one facial scrub and mask with a special formulation of rice bran, brown rice and Frankincense oil that gently exfoliates and brightens up the skin.

Ingredients:

Oryza sativa powder, oryza sativa bran, boswellia sacra oil, rosa oil, vitis vinifera oil.

How I use it:

1. Dry face after cleaning it with normal cleanser
2. Take out a small amount of product, mix it with water to form a paste.
3. Apply it onto face, scrubbing it gently in circular motions for about 1-2 minutes.
4. Leave on until it dries; rinse residue off with water.

Packaging

The powdery product is quite a hassle to pour out from a glass jar.

Stars: ★★

Scent

I would say it is fine.

Stars: ★★

Scrub beads

Before adding water

Remember to rub in gentle, circular motion unless you have thick skin haha. I prefer to keep my scrub more thick (3 drops of water or so?) but if you find it too rough for your skin, add a few more drops of water. However, avoid adding too much water if not it will be quite hard to apply.

Stars: ★★

Aftermath

Used it quite religiously but the difference is not wow.

Stars:

Frequency

Although the ingredients are au-naturel, it will dry your skin if you use it too frequently. I recommend twice a week, especially when you make up on a daily basis.

Stars: ★★★.5☆(4.5/5)

The Verdict:

This is pretty so-so to me. I am not impressed enough to go through the trouble to use this. Then again, everyone's skin is different.

Pros:

- More natural ingredients

Cons:

- Slightly more troublesome to use
- Exfoliation effect is not impressive

Basic Theory Hydrating Facial Toner

What: Toner
Suitable for: Normal to dry skin
Consistency: Water
Made in: Singapore

BT hydrating facial toner is suitable for people with normal to dry skin. It aims to keep face looking young and radiant by reducing the appearance of marks and wrinkles.

Ingredients:

Aqua, aloe barbadensis juice, witch hazel, cananga odorata oil, rosa oil, vitis vinifera oil, soy lecithin.

Star Ingredients:

Frankincense oil: Balance the amount of sebum and moisture secretion

How I use it:

1. After cleansing, spray product directly onto face or onto a cotton pad.
2. Gently pat product onto face using an upward motion, allowing it to be fully absorbed.
3. Continue with usual skincare routine.
*Refresh the skin during the day or night by spraying it onto the face when dehydrated.

Packaging

Like the toner from Flower2 Grass2, this also comes in a spay form. The sample however comes in a normal pour bottle.

Stars: ★★

Ingredients

Basic Theory is a faithful advocate for natural ingredients. Additional goodness like ylang ylang oil is added to keep your skin from break outs and excess sebum production.

Stars: ★★

Lifts off excess dirt and sebum

I don't wash my face with a facial cleanser in the morning. Thus, to remove any sebum produced during my zzz time, I will go over with a toner. I find this particular toner rather suitable as it contains ingredients which help regulate oil etc.

Stars: ★★

On skin

Absorption is pretty decent and it does not leave any sticky residue. However, I find that it will make my skin a little less smooth though!

Stars: ★★

Effects

I used to use it like a regular toner (day and night, pat in) but I did not notice any significant changes. In my opinion, this works better as a cleansing toner. But then again, my skin is more towards the dry side so maybe this is one of the reasons why it does not work very well for me.

Stars: ★★

The Verdict:

As a cleansing toner, it is fine. For people with dry skin, you can go over with a moisturising toner after you remove all the last bit of make up/dirt with this. I will only tone with this when I find my skin more oily than usual (period yo). For people who are suffering from acne, you can consider testing this out as it is very gentle. Oh ya this toner is quite value for money too.

Pros:

- Gentle to skin
- Natural ingredients
- Lifts off dirt and excess sebum
- Suitable for combi/oily skin
- Works as cleansing toner
- Value for money

Cons:

- Not suitable for dry skin

Rating: 8/10
