Review: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella

Promises

Upon application, lips are instantly saturated with rich pigments and a velvety matte finish. This long-lasting, non-drying formula is both enriched with emollients for a creamy texture and equipped with a combination of unique silicone for a seamless colour lasting for hours. Good for use for lining, all-over lip colour, or even pairing with another lip product.

Packaging

Shaped like a pencil with the shade of the lip colour indicated at the end of it. The body of NARS lip crayon is matte but don't worry, it does not leave makeup residue on it easily.  


I would really appreciate if they can change the packaging to twist-up product. 

Sharpening will waste a lot of precious lip crayon. Got this sharpener during the purchase of an older lip crayon. If you are looking for affordable lip crayon sharpener, you can take a look at Catrice. I have one from them too.

Tip

Dome shape tip for ease of shaping. It is not as sharp after prolonged use but remained very to control. 

Size/Amount of Product

I am very happy to find the sample size for lip products. How many of you have ever finished a full-sized lip colour before? Not me. Many ended up in the bin after being on the makeup shelf for too long. But there may be a chance to finish this, partially due to the loss of product from sharpening as well. 

Colour

There are 17 colours for you to choose from but everything is available in 'sample' size. There is a good selection of reds, browns, pinks and purples for both cool and warm skin tones. I am sure you will find something suitable for you. 


The reds they offered are great for warmer skin tones. Generally, I prefer bolder/darker colours from American brands. 

Curella (Scarlet red) is a warm red. It is not too bold and striking, making it suitable even for daily wear. 

Ease Of Use

One reason why I love lip crayons is that I can create a very clean look with it. It is effortless to outline and fill my lips. NARS matte lip pencil is very pigmented, it covers my natural lip colour very well. 

On Lips

One of the main considerations over matte lipsticks is the concern over whether it would be drying on the lips. Yet, despite this being a matte lipstick, this is not drying at all. It does not emphasise lip lines and does not bleed or smudge throughout the day. It is very comfortable on lips, in fact, it doesn't feel like much on your lips at all. A super plus point for this product.

Effect/Swatch

On lips

It looks brighter than how the swatch came up. 

Transfer-proof/Waterproof

Waterproof but it will still transfer onto cups/tissue etc. Not excessively though, so don't worry about it. 

Lasting Power

Has some level of staining power but touch up required after meals. This doesn't worsen when used over peeling lips. 





NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil has been in my pouch for months. This is my go-to touch up colour because it is suitable for many occasions. Lightly dab to bring colour to face and the intensity can be build up if required. I like how versatile it is and the formulation is perfect for me. 
I am ok with touching up after a meal or as and when needed. It is great and I really like this shade of red - warm and bright.
